{"id":4407,"date":"2024-11-30T08:31:09","date_gmt":"2024-11-30T08:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beyondbeijing.org\/lms\/?post_type=courses&#038;p=4407"},"modified":"2025-02-28T08:52:34","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T08:52:34","slug":"module-1-understanding-sex-gender-and-gender-equality-concepts-practices","status":"publish","type":"courses","link":"https:\/\/beyondbeijing.org\/lms\/courses\/module-1-understanding-sex-gender-and-gender-equality-concepts-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"Module 1: Understanding Sex, Gender and Gender Equality Concepts &#038; Practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>INTRODUCTION<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the very conceptual differences between sex and gender and gender-related concepts are pre-requisite for internalizing &#8216;equality of human beings&#8217; as declared in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 1948\u2019s article 1 \u201cAll human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UDHR embraced non-discrimination and equality as one of its basic principles. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, regardless of nationality, sex, sexual orientation, gender, age, abilities, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status human beings are entitled to human rights <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because we exist as human beings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All human beings <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have an equal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right which is recognized by all major Human Rights instruments including the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), yet women of all diversities and other genders and sexual oriented people LGBTQI+ <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are subject to discrimination all over<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discrimination against women, LGBTQI+ and other genders of diverse, and Sex Characteristics is a major cause of not accessing SRH services by all. As an entrance of the concept of SOGIESC and LGBTQI+ into the concept of gender equality in Nepal has not been that long. Only in 2015, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constitution <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledged the rights to equality<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of gender and sexual minorities in an article (Article 18). However, in most of the public documents, the term gender is referred to women and men of cisgender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To embrace the aim for gender equality in the context of SRHR, an attempt is made in this document to include all genders with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities &amp; expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) who have so often been left out by traditional bi-nary gender concept and its approaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall objective of this module is to increase understanding of gender equality-related concepts that are required for developing equality skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tentative duration dedicated to this module is five hours (1 hour per session). It is divided into five sessions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Session 1. Concept of sex and gender and gendering process<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Session 2. Concept of division of work and resources<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Session 3. Concept of gender roles, position and situation of genders<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Session 4. Gender relations and Gender needs<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Session 5.
